To many, Poetry, Mcing, Djing, Beat boxing, graffiti writing, Street Language, Street Knowledge and Street Entrepreneurialism are some of the elements that comply with in Hip Hop.
The First Hip Hop stake holder’s meeting under Youth and Hip Hop project on 9th 03.2011 at the National Theater was honored by some of the Hip Hop Community groups and foundations like Bavubuka Foundation, The Bonfire project, Tabu Flow Break dancing group among others.
“The official opening of the Youth and Hip Hop project is Friday of 11th at the Hip Hop workshop here in Kampala; he projects age limit is from 13 to 25 years though since most of the Age group quite doesn’t relate to the Most Hip Hoppers in Uganda, the age limit will be revised because we need every one in the Hip Hop community on board” says Faisal Kiwewa, the Bayimba Cultural Foundation’s Director.
The Youths and Hip Hop projects targets youths and its objective; is to teach skills as well as create ambassadors of Hip Hop from each region with in Uganda. To achieve this, all ambassadors of Hip Hop in Uganda to unite and create a social transformation within the grass roots as well as their hoods.
“Uganda and Denmark are two diverse communities; I am also here to learn and it’s a good sign to know you are interested in the project… it doesn’t mean that one will be an international celebrity but it’s a great platform to learn the skills in Hip Hop” Says Joseph Mbida from Getto Gourmeton; one of the partners for the Youth and Hip Hop project.
Are you thinking of being your communities ambassador? The youth and Hip Hop Project have mapped out youths from different regions in Uganda to be the representatives of those regions. This has been backed by a two day workshop of the representatives which took place at the Hotel Triangle in Kampala.
The ongoing Two weeks workshop in Jinja which started from 14th of March 2011 till the 26th march 2011 is facilitated by Faisal Kiwewa, Kas Kasozi, and Silas Babaluku among others; attended by Emcees, Poets and rappers from Jinja and Kampala.
The participants in the Youths and Hip Hop workshop in Jinja will perform at the Bayimba Regional festival of the Arts in Jinja on 26th march, Arua on 30th April, 28th May, 25th June, 30th July and the Bayimba International Festival of the Arts from 16th to 18th September 2011.
Other Projects in the youth and Hip Hop workshop are :the Youth and Film supported by Maisha and Amakula, The youth and Theatre which is made in partnership with Makerere University; The Youth and Hip Hop project is being sponsored by the Danish Embassy in partnership with Bayimba Cultural Foundation.
