Bayimba Academy relaunches prestigious Arts Journalism Programme to mentor Uganda’s next generation of cultural critics

For Immediate Release

KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Bayimba Academy is proud to announce the return of its specialized Arts Journalism Training, a revitalized initiative designed to professionalize cultural reporting and creative writing in Uganda. Applications are now open for the 2026 cohort, with a submission deadline of 30th May.

As Uganda’s creative industries—spanning music, visual arts, film, and theatre—reach new heights of global visibility, the need for rigorous, ethical, and well-researched journalism has become paramount. The Bayimba Academy’s Arts Journalism programme aims to bridge the gap between social media commentary and professional critique.

“Art is the soul of a nation, but journalism is its memory,” says the Bayimba Academy. “Without professional arts journalism, our cultural milestones risk being forgotten. This programme is about investing in writers who can document our history with precision and integrity.”

The Training Programme

The intensive residency will run from 16th – 31st August, focusing on four core pillars:

  • Research: Navigating archives and contextualizing art within Ugandan history.
  • Ethics: Upholding journalistic independence and intellectual property.
  • Precision: Mastering the technical vocabulary of various artistic disciplines.
  • Accuracy: Prioritizing fact-checking and rigorous reporting standards.

Call for Applications

The Academy is seeking 15–20 aspiring creative writers, literature students, and early-career journalists. Selected participants will undergo two weeks of hands-on mentorship, culminating in the production of high-quality features and reviews for publication.
